Why We Need More Fiber in our Diet (It Really Helps!)

We love to eat spicy food. Well, we really just love to eat. But lately if Triton eats past 6 pm, he feels really uncomfortable and weighed down. Nobody ever talks about this stuff, so here we are – talking about this stuff! We recently discovered that more fiber in our diet helps our digestive system process more effectively. Metamucil has provided that source of fiber in our diet, and it has made a huge difference in just two weeks.

More Fiber in our Diet

We live in San Diego, and we boast our Mexican food here to be the best in all the land. In our house, we enjoy Mexican dishes at least a couple of times per week – and they can be pretty heavy. All that melted cheese, sauce and spices with nearly zero vegetables can take its toll. Regardless of how delicious to food tastes, the end result is a feeling of extreme fullness.

Young, old or anywhere in between, humans digest our food in different ways. Some people go through life eating cheesy enchiladas with few issues. However, most of us could benefit from smoother sailing.

The human digestive system benefits from the inclusion of fiber, because a fiber diet moves through our bodies in a natural flow. Because of our erratic American diets, the absence of fiber causes irregularity, discomfort, upset stomach and yes, even gas.

In fact, something like 95% of Americans don’t get enough daily fiber intake in their regular diet and are feeling the pain. Not sure what people might be eating in other countries, but here in the US? For some reason, we think of fiber as eating sawdust or tree bark. Actually, far from it.

Metamucil Brings the Fiber

Rather than trying to eat what amounts to one entire serving of broccoli, a regular daily dosage of Metamucil supplies the same amount of fiber. (Besides, we think it tastes a whole lot better too.)

The main ingredient in Metamucil is 100% natural psyllium fiber, a soluble gelling fiber that works with your digestive system to help trap and remove waste that weighs you down*. Not only that, it helps lower cholesterol to promote heart health and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels as part of your diet*. Plus there are a number of other positive benefits that help your body stay healthy – not the least of which is your tummy feeling calm and comfortable.

Two Week Challenge

We’ve embarked on the Metamucil Two Week Challenge, and we encourage you to try it as well. Starting slow and working up to 3 servings per day, we’ve been experiencing the benefits of adding Metamucil to our regular daily routine for a good fiber diet.

Triton and I both have mixed one serving of Metamucil in an 8-ounce glass of water, and then slurped it down. We can take one of these servings up to three times per day. You’d think this might make you feel heavy and it does not. The Metamucil fiber thickens and forms a gel, slowing digestion and absorption which aids in the sensation of fullness, allowing you to feel less hungry between meals.* It’s not a meal replacement, but rather a supplement best taken at meal times.

Nearly two weeks in, we’re feeling so much less weighed down*. We didn’t change our diets and have continued to eat lots of spicy, heavy food, but it just feels different. That old gurgling weight in our stomachs is lifted, and the 100% natural psyllium fiber is doing its thing to restore regularity*!

Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk, as in Metamucil, may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. One serving of Metamucil Powder has at least 2.4 grams of this soluble fiber. Consult a doctor if you are considering use of this product as part of a cholesterol-lowering program.
