Ritz-Carlton Has Hawaii Covered 3 Ways - 2 Dads with Baggage

Ritz-Carlton Has Hawaii Covered 3 Ways

We’ve been to the Hawaiian Islands many times, but until now have never enjoyed them the Ritz-Carlton way. After indulging in a luxury visit to Hawaii that included all three Ritz-Carlton Hawaii properties, we can say without a doubt that this has been our most luxurious hotel experience in Hawaii. All in one trip, we visited the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, the Ritz-Carlton Residences Oahu, Waikiki Beach and the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua Bay. Regardless of which you choose, the three Ritz-Carlton Hawaii resorts deliver singular and special encounters.

Ritz-Carlton Hawaii Resorts Deliver Authenticity

There is just something about the way the Ritz-Carlton hotel brand interprets the nuances of each location in which they operate. Each hotel plays up its own unique perspective of what the destination has to offer. Regardless of where you visit in the world, the high-touch, service-oriented experience of staying at a Ritz-Carlton hotel delivers on its stellar brand reputation.

In Hawaii, each of the three hotels provides a uniquely Hawaiian experience that feels different than the others. Although the Hawaiian Islands share many unique traits as a collective destination, each island has its own personality and appealing attributes. Knowing this, it makes sense that not all luxury hotels in Hawaii are the same. What a visitor might find on the Island of Oahu could be very different than the experience on the Island of Maui. Even different sides of the same island can feel unique and singular. Oahu is one example, where one side is very populated while the rest is open and uncrowded.

When we’re asked to recommend the best hotels in Hawaii, our answers depend on what kind of vacation the traveler is looking for.

How To Choose Your Hawaiian Adventure

While being true to what makes the Ritz-Carlton brand so special, each of the three Ritz-Carlton Hawaii resorts offer unique personalities and experiences. Just like the different Islands of Hawaii, these resorts have adapted to their local surroundings on Oahu and Maui.

When deciding on which Hawaiian Islands to visit, use our handy guide to help understand how the eight main islands differ in offerings, personalities and even terrain.

Oahu – The Gathering Place (also referred to as the Main Island)

More than 70% of Hawaii’s state population lives on O’ahu, and it is the center of business, culture and government. Honolulu and world-famous Waikiki Beach make Oahu the initial stop for many first-time visitors to Hawaii.

Waikiki Beach welcomes visitors from around the world.
Maui – The Valley Isle

Named for the large central valley between its two major volcanoes, Maui is the second-most popular Hawaiian destination for visitors. Many people have second homes on Maui, and the island’s tradewinds and active lifestyle offer compelling options for travelers to engage.

The Island of Maui offers a number of protected bays and inlets perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Hawaii – The Big Island

More than two times larger than the other islands combined, The Big Island is home to two active volcanoes, rocky terrain from lava flows, and rich soil perfect for growing fruits and vegetables. Hilo is a historic settlement with local charm, and Kona is known for its resorts, diving and ocean sports.

Nothing says Hawaii like watching outriggers in the morning surf.
Kauai – The Garden Isle

Famous for its lush tropical foliage , flowering plants and bright green valleys, this is the wettest and densest jungle island of the group. Kauai is ideal for hiking, boating, fishing, snorkeling and surfing, with many quiet inlets and unpopulated areas. Almost 90% of the island is designated as a natural preserve or for agriculture, and the island’s total resident population is only about 73,000.

The sandy shores of Poipu Beach is a great place for learning to snorkel.
Molokai – The Friendly Isle

Molokai earns its name from its very small local community and few visitors, which makes the experience of meeting someone here even more meaningful. Friendly Island locals welcome outsiders with a slower-paced experience, warm smiles and gentle hearts.

Lanai – The Pineapple Isle (or The Secluded Isle)

Once the location of the world’s largest pineapple plantation, Lanai is very, very quiet with just two or three resorts and no major towns or communities. This is true Hawaii as it might have been many moons ago, and visitors here are likely to enjoy complete solitude, quiet, and access to natural settings.

Niihau – The Forbidden Isle

Just off the western coast of Kauai sits the Island of Niihau, which is completely preserved to maintain the native Hawaiian culture. Privately owned and off-limits to visitors, the island has just under 100 residents.

Kahoolawe – The Target Island

A terrible moniker I hope they rename, the Target Island earned that title due to its use as a military bombing site. The island is now going through ecological restoration, and is known as a good diving site.

Three Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Hawaii

If Hawaiian luxury is what you seek, Ritz-Carlton has got you covered three ways. Here’s how each of the three Ritz-Carlton Hawaii properties are different from one another, and why we loved visiting all three.

The famous Hawaiian Mai Tai is served fresh in the lobby bar at the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay.

Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay

On Oahu’s North Shore, the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay sits on 1,300 acres of pristine coastline. Surfing waves, horseback trails and open space replace the higher energy found in Honolulu. The resort features 408 guest rooms and suites, along with 42 Ocean Bungalows positioned directly along the shoreline. We were fortunate to enjoy an Ocean Bungalow room, which spilled out onto an expansive lanai overlooking green lawns and the ocean beyond.

Bungalow guests at Turtle Bay enjoy access to a private pool.

Every accommodation here faces the Pacific. Rooms are bright and contemporary, with oversized lanais, soaking tubs and floor-to-ceiling windows that highlight its oceanfront presence. With more privacy, the Ocean Bungalows include dedicated concierge service. A private pool and immediate proximity to the sand and surf round out the experience.

Overall, the resort offers multiple swimming pools, the Nalu Spa and a long list of outdoor activities. Guests can take advantage of its North Shore setting by learning to surf, ride horses along the coast, and play golf or pickleball. There are also miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through the property and along the rugged shoreline.

Why Choose the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay feels distinctly removed from the energy of Waikiki, offering a different perspective on Oahu. The resort is an ideal combination of luxury and tropical Hawaiian settings. Along with the resort experience, there are so many things to do here. It’s a perfect example of how Ritz-Carlton Hawaii can interpret this unique setting.

Kayak with Turtles

The waters just offshore from Turtle Bay are home to one of Hawaii’s most beloved residents: the Hawaiian green sea turtle. Guided kayak excursions depart from The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay giving guests the opportunity to paddle along the coastline. During the tour, it’s common to view these gentle marine reptiles as they surface for air and glide beneath the clear water. The pace is leisurely and unhurried. There is plenty of time to observe coral formations, tropical fish, and the changing colors of the Pacific. Guides share information about the local marine ecosystem and the conservation efforts that help protect these beautiful creatures.

Cultural Bike Tour

A bicycle can be a surprisingly effective way to cover 1,300 acres of North Shore history. During Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay’s Cultural Bike Tour, local guides lead guests across the resort’s expansive property. During the tour, they share stories about the people, traditions, and events that have shaped this stretch of Oahu. Stops along the route include cultural sites, scenic overlooks, and areas of historical significance. Many visitors would pass these sites without realizing their importance. Between stories, riders are treated to wide-open views of the coastline and native landscapes. There is so much to this resort property that extends far beyond the guest rooms and restaurants.

Take Surf Lessons

Learning to surf on Oahu’s North Shore can be a humbling experience. One minute you’re listening to an instructor explain timing and balance. The next, you’re tumbling into the Pacific while your board heads in a different direction. At The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, lessons take place in a protected section of coastline. Beginners can focus on the fundamentals without the intimidating conditions found at nearby big-wave surf breaks. Instructors cover paddling, positioning, and technique before students head into the water to test their skills. Between attempts, there are usually plenty of laughs and a few spectacular wipeouts. The ultimate payoff is a short ride or two waves that make all the effort feel worthwhile.

Guided Horseback Rides

One of the most memorable ways to experience Oahu’s North Shore is from the saddle of a horse. Nothing but open coastline stretches ahead, with tropical foliage on either side. At Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, the horses seem to know the route better than the riders. Guided trail rides follow coastal paths across the resort’s 1,300 acres. Ironwood trees lean toward the ocean, and waves break against black volcanic rock below. The pace is intentionally unhurried, giving riders time to take in the scenery rather than focus on maneuvering. Along the way, guides point out filming locations and native plants. Ride along sections of coastline that remain largely unchanged from when this part of Oahu was used for ranching. It’s a fun way to access stretches of the North Shore that many visitors never see from the road.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach

Rising above the western end of Waikiki Beach, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach offers a different take on the traditional Hawaiian resort experience. Rather than sprawling grounds and beachfront lawns, this urban retreat takes a high-rise luxury approach. The resort is within close walking distance of Waikiki’s restaurants, shopping and nightlife, while still delivering sweeping views of the Pacific. The property features more than 500 residential-style guest rooms, suites and penthouses spread across two towers. Accommodations here are among the largest in Waikiki and are fully equipped. All rooms includes kitchens, spacious living areas, oversized bathrooms, laundry, and enormous private lanais.

The disappearing edge pool is dramatically perched on the 8th floor of the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki.

A standout feature of this resort is its eighth-floor infinity pool, one of the highest in Waikiki. From here, we could enjoy uninterrupted ocean views stretching from Waikiki Beach towards Diamond Head. A second family-friendly pool, private cabanas and the Ritz-Carlton Spa round out the resort amenities. Guests can spend the morning exploring Honolulu, hiking Diamond Head or surfing Waikiki’s famous breaks before returning for sunset cocktails overlooking the shoreline.

Why Choose the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach

For travelers who want luxury accommodations in the heart of the action rather than removed from it, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach delivers one of the most polished addresses on Oahu. And there are plenty of things to keep guests occupied during their visit, both on-property and out exploring the island.

Suites at the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki are enormous with stunning ocean views.
Enjoy a Private Luau

Most luaus are designed for crowds, and this one decidedly is not. The Ritz-Carlton Waikiki can arrange a private luau next to their main pool, just for two or four guests. Live Hawaiian music, hula, and storytelling unfold before you alone, rather than hundreds of spectators. Dinner is tailored to the occasion, served with ocean views and a front-row seat to performances that trace the islands’ history and traditions. As the sun settles behind the Pacific and tiki torches begin to flicker, a local musician shares Hawaiian songs that have been passed down through generations. Next to him, a solo hula dancer brings ancient stories and island traditions to life. Without the distractions of a large audience, guests have the opportunity to ask questions, interact with performers, and gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the music and dance.

A private luau for two is a special treat available only at the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki.
Drive a Moke Around Honolulu

Part beach cruiser, part golf cart, and entirely impossible to ignore, the Moke is a unique open-air vehicle. It’s street legal, safe, and so, so fun to drive. Guests of The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach can borrow an exclusive Moke to explore Oahu at their own pace, complete with sky views and trade winds. The compact electric vehicle is ideal for a leisurely loop around Diamond Head or a stop at a neighborhood shave ice stand. We drove ours to Mano Falls (see below). It would be easy fun to discover corners of Honolulu that often blur past from the back seat of an uber. With no roof overhead and little separating passengers from their surroundings, every drive feels connected to the island itself. It’s the sort of vehicle that encourages spontaneous detours, even if pulling over to watch surfers below a coastal lookout or lingering a little longer at a beach wasn’t on the original itinerary.

Only at the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki, guests can check out a special Moke to tool around town.
Hike to Manoa Falls

A short drive in the Moke from The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach leads to a very different landscape. The trail to Manoa Falls winds through a rainforest where giant bamboo stalks creak overhead. Nearby roots twist across the path, and dense greenery crowds the edges of the valley. Guests hiking with a Ritz-Carlton guide gain more than directions to the waterfall. Along the route, our guide led us in a ceremonial chant to ask Hawaiian ancestors to bless our passage. Then she pointed out native plants, explaining their traditional uses, and shared stories tied to the valley’s history. The hike ends at the base of Manoa Falls, where water tumbles nearly 150 feet down a sheer rock face framed by tropical vegetation. Frequent rain showers keep the valley remarkably green year-round.  Because of this landscape, the valley has served as a backdrop for numerous films and television productions. On this walk, hikers can spot colorful ginger blooms, towering tree ferns, and the occasional brighly-colored tropical bird. Nearby streams crisscross the trail before gathering at the waterfall below.

Experience Authentic Hawaiian Spa Treatments

The Story of Manoa treatment at The Ritz-Carlton Spa draws inspiration from the Manoa Vally experienced in the hike. Misty upland forests sit above Honolulu and have a long, sacred history with the Hawaiian culture. The experience begins with a full-body sugar exfoliation infused with Hawaiian ‘olena, the local variety of turmeric long valued in traditional wellness practices. Lehua blossoms add subtle floral notes to the treatment. From there, therapists perform an relaxing lomilomi massage. This modality uses long, flowing strokes designed to mimic the movement of water through the valley’s streams and waterfalls. The treatment reflects the ingredients, landscapes, and healing traditions found in one of Oahu’s most verdant regions. It’s a wonderful way to bring a small piece of the rainforest into the spa treatment room.

The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua

Set along the golden sands of Kapalua on Maui’s northwest coast, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua occupies 54 acres of pristine coastline. Although not geographically that far, it feels worlds away from the island’s busier resort corridors. Developed on land once used as a pineapple plantation, the resort embraces its setting with lush tropical landscaping. Coastal trails meander throughout, and enormous public balconies allow for panoramic views of the Pacific. The property features 466 guest rooms and suites, including private lanais with ocean, gardens or golf course views.

Guests will find plenty to fill their days without ever leaving the property. Multiple swimming pools, including a family-friendly tiered pool complex, anchor the outdoor experience. Nearby, the resort’s extensive spa facilities draw inspiration from Hawaiian healing traditions. A championship golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, cultural programs and direct access to miles of hiking trails showcase the natural beauty of Kapalua. During whale season, the waters just offshore become one of Hawaii’s premier viewing areas. It’s no wonder that travelers continue returning to this longtime Maui favorite.

Why Choose The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua

Choose this version of Ritz-Carlton Hawaii if you are looking for a full-service luxury resort experience midway between isolation and civilization. You are aware there is a community nearby, but the resort is isolated and private enough to feel like its guests are the only people on the planet. The resort is famous for its golf course, which has hosted many PGA tournaments and is considered top quality by all standards.

Like the two other Ritz-Carlton Hawaii resorts, the Ritz-Carlton Maui offers unique experiences along Kapalua Bay. Energize up or power down here, depending on your mood of the moment.

Looking back towards the main lobby from the pool area, the Ritz-Carlton Maui is a warm and inviting stay.
Guided eBike Tour Along Kapalua Bay

Guests joining the guided eBike tour quickly discover that some of Kapalua’s most interesting landscapes sit just beyond the resort’s manicured grounds. Led by naturalists from the Ambassadors of the Environment program, the excursion follows a network of paved paths that weave through forests, open meadows, and lesser-traveled corners of the property. The electric-assisted bikes make the ride accessible to a wide range of fitness levels. Along the route, guides point out wild guava trees, towering pines, native plants, and the occasional chameleon hidden among the foliage. We visited several gorgeous bays and inlets along the route. We also ventured uphill to the treeline and original home of the local man who oversaw the entire Kapalua area. Nearby, an outdoor farmers market sells fresh, locally-grown fruit and produce along with snacks and collectibles. The ride offers an opportunity to see a side of Maui often missed by visitors whose explorations begin and end at the beach or pool.

Enjoy an Authentic Luau

As the sun begins its descent toward the Pacific, guests can gather at the Ritz-Carlton Maui. The evening is dedicated to Hawaiian music, dance, food, and storytelling. The luau begins with traditional Hawaiian games,  locally crafted gift displays, and cultural demonstrations. These are great opportunities to learn about island traditions before dinner is served. Throughout the evening, musicians, chanters, and hula dancers share stories that trace Hawaii’s history and mythology. The menu highlights local ingredients and traditional dishes, and is probably the most delicious luau food we have tasted. Set against the backdrop of Kapalua’s coastline, the experience offers an entertaining introduction to many of the customs and cultural practices that continue to shape life in the islands today.

Even the gardens outside the Ritz-Carlton Maui’s luau experience welcome guests with local excitement.
Explore the Coastline on a Guided Nature Walk

Long before modern highways circled Maui, the Alaloa Trail served as one of the island’s primary routes for travel and trade. Today, guests of The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua can walk a 1.7-mile section of this historic pathway. The guides for this experience are naturalists from the Ambassadors of the Environment program. The trail follows a rugged stretch of coastline where lava rock formations, native vegetation, and sweeping ocean views create a dramatic backdrop for the journey. Along the way, guides discuss seabirds that nest in protected shoreline habitats.  They also explain the significance of ancestral burial grounds located near the resort. The hike combines natural history with cultural context, offering a glimpse into how Hawaiians navigated and inhabited this coastline centuries before the arrival of modern roads.

Along the coastal walkway next to Ritz-Carlton Maui are many postcard-perfect scenes like this one.
Chill in a Pool Cabana

Not every day in Maui needs an itinerary. At The Ritz-Carlton Maui, a private pool cabana provides a comfortable headquarters for guests to relax. Here, guests plans don’t need to extend beyond the next swim, lunch, or afternoon nap. Positioned beside the resort’s multi-level pool complex, the cabanas offer shade, dedicated service, and easy access to food and drinks throughout the day. Between dips in the water, guests can settle into a lounge chair with a book. Or watch palm fronds sway overhead. Or simply enjoy views across the resort grounds towards Kapalua Bay. It’s a simple pleasure, but one that becomes surprisingly easy to appreciate after a few days of adventure.

Choose Your Hawaiian Adventure

Much like Hawaii itself, each of the Ritz-Carlton Hawai’i resorts has its own personality. The differences between Waikiki, Turtle Bay, and Kapalua are as noticeable as the differences between the islands themselves. What remains consistent is the service and level of luxury, regardless of what form that takes. Each property approaches this in the same thoughtful, highly attentive way that has become synonymous with the Ritz-Carlton name.

But really, why choose? Stay at all three and make the comparison for yourself like we did. It was one of the best resort experiences in Hawaii we have ever had. That’s saying a lot, considering we have been to the Hawaiian Islands more than 15 times.

We can book your trip! Let us help you plan.
